Tie Wraps, Tractors, and Tarps Bring Hope To Young Girls

Friends of Ecole Agape
Lillie Tierney and Rikke Wassenberg take a trip back from tie-wrapping tarp onto the newly constructed storage shelter.

Behind the scenes at Friends of Ecole Agape there’s a group of hard-working volunteers who build storage shelters and drive tractors. Many tractor trips and hundreds of tie-wraps later, a shelter stands at the far end of Rikke Wassenberg’s property serving as storage for a set of tables and chairs purchased from St. Jude’s church in Willington, ready to go for the next fundraising event for Ecole Agape, the only free all-girls’ school in Haiti.

Ted Hill and the newest members, Margaret Judy (aka “Maggie”) and Peter Kirk, also helped set up the structure, which involved the creative use of tarps and tie-wraps, lots and lots of tie wraps. Just how many tie wraps does it take to build a storage shelter? As many as necessary, Maggie said.

The next fundraising event to support Ecole Agape is April 7, 2018, at St. Philip Parish Center, Route 44, Ashford, CT, from 5 to 9 pm. Please come and enjoy many delicious hors d’oeuvres and great wines. There will also be Haitian art for sale, brought here straight from Haiti. Purchasing these Haitian crafts supports the local craftspeople while also supporting the school.
